LiDAR Topographic Survey for Urbanization

High-precision LiDAR survey for 170-block urbanization project

Technical Challenge

The development of a large-scale urbanization project required a high-resolution topographic survey over an area of 170 blocks. The terrain, characterized by its irregular topography and dense surrounding vegetation, presented a challenge for acquiring precise data.

The need was to generate a detailed graphic representation in plans that included not only the terrain surface, but also adjacent infrastructure such as roads, power transmission lines, and buildings. Data precision and classification were critical for the design and earthwork calculation phase.

LiDAR Solution

We deployed a UAV platform equipped with a high-precision LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scanner. The sensor's ability to penetrate vegetation allowed the acquisition of millions of data points representing the actual ground surface, eliminating the need for extensive ground-based measurements.

The workflow included acquisition, processing, and classification of the point cloud to separate and label elements such as terrain (DTM), vegetation, road infrastructure, and buildings.

Results and Deliverables

Classified Point Cloud
LAS/LAZ files with millions of classified points for 3D modeling and information extraction.
Digital Elevation Model
DEM with 25 cm resolution, representing the terrain surface without vegetation.
CAD Plans
Plans in DWG and PDF format with contour lines (0.25m equidistance), topographic sections, and tree survey.
Georeferenced Orthoimage
High-resolution orthomosaic with contour lines overlaid, providing detailed visual context.

Why is Ave Drones the best ally for these cases?

The high precision of LiDAR data facilitates optimized planning, reduces uncertainty in data and therefore interpolation, and provides an authentic digital twin, an interactive tool to extract much more information. It also reduces the margin of human error by being an automated tool.
